About these papers
Each RCF Practice Paper follows the format of the latest G.C.E. (O/L) Appreciation of English Literary Texts examination (46 E I, II), as set in 2023(2024) and 2024(2025) and in the Ministry of Education's 2025(2026) model papers. Every paper covers all the prescribed genres, and together the five papers cover every set text.
Paper I (40 marks)
Section A: six short extracts (two poetry, two prose, two drama). Each carries 5 marks: (a) name the text and author, 1; (b) and (c) understanding of the extract, 1 + 1; (d) inference or response, 2.
Section B: choose one novel extract from three. (i) identification, 2; (ii) comprehension, 2; (iii) meanings of two phrases, 1 + 1; (iv) critical response, 4.
Paper II (60 marks)
Four essays, one each from Poetry, Drama, Prose and Fiction. Each essay carries 15 marks: Content 7, Organisation 4, Language 4.
How to use them
- Print the paper, or write your answers in a notebook. Keep the answers hidden.
- Time yourself: about 1 hour for Paper I and 2 hours for Paper II.
- Then open the answers and mark your work. In Paper II, check that you answered the question, used quotations and organised your essay clearly.
- Revise the texts you found difficult with the RCF Study Guides on this site.
